How we arrive at a fair Price for your car
So you’ve arrived at Ibuycarz presumably, smack in the middle of searching for a new set of wheels, and need to get the best (and deserving) price on your trade-in. After 30 years in the car market, we know many of the frustrations people like you endure. Stuff like:
- Car salespeople pulling the wool over your eyes, telling you how the market for your trade-in model has tanked.
- Telling you your mileage is too high
- Finding phantom body & paintwork that suggests your car visited a panel shop
- Informing you that the market is flooded with your model so they can’t pay you full book value
- Giving you a discount on the new car, but then attempting to cover the loss with your trade-in
I’m sure there’s more that can be added.
But nonetheless, kudos to you – for shopping around, and educating yourself on the “True” value of your car. There’s no better way to ensure you get your full money’s worth back.
Even if you get two, three or five thousand more than a regular car dealer would have offered – that’s more hard-earned money back in your pocket, that you could use for accessories, a long overdue holiday or finally do those home improvements you’ve been putting off!

The Truth About Trade-in Value
What are the real factors that influence the price of your trade-in?You’ve undoubtedly heard people saying: “Buy a Toyota for their resale value.”
While some of it is perception – there is some truth in that statement. But what makes certain cars retain a higher percentage of their original sale value compared to others?
With mid-range cars like a Toyota Corolla or VW Polo, it could simply come down to the demand in the market for these cars. You know that concept we learned in Economics 101 – supply & demand!
But if one digs deeper – there are other factors that play a role in ensuring a trade-in doesn’t shed value like hair falling at a barber shop sale.
Here are some practical steps you could consider that may help you get the most bang for your trade-in buck!
Factors that hurt your trade-in value
- Excessive mileage. This needs no explanation. More mileage means more wear & tear
- No service history. You may have had regular oil & plugs changes in your backyard – but if there’s no franchise service history, your car’s value will suffer
- Your car’s brand. Some brands simply retain value better than others. This could be down to overall maintenance cost of the car brand being low, or its reputation for reliability. Exotic imported brands may impress your friends initially, but generally depreciate much higher than the mainstream makes like Toyota, VW or Ford.
- Condition & appearance. Any noticeable damage or scratches will harm your trade-in value.
- Poor interior condition. Like the point above – if your interior smells of stale smoke, is covered in your pet’s fur or just generally not well looked after – expect a few Rands deducted from the potential valuation.
- Poor driving habits. Have you been moonlighting as a weekend dragster? The effects of hammering your car will show up in the hands of an experienced evaluator.
- Paint colour. Yes, unfortunately – white may be boring. But will probably get you more on the 2nd hand market than that lovely shocking pink.
Factors that benefit your trade-in value
- Full franchise service history. Those little dealer stamps on your service manual are worth their weight in gold
- Mint original condition. By caring for your car with regular wax & detailing, keeping it sheltered and thus protected from the harsh sun and frost, and preserving the interior as original as possible – you’ll be piling on the added value when trade-in time comes around.
- If your car’s body does have a couple of dings or stone chips — consider having these flaws professionally fixed before putting your car on the market.
- Modifications. Some accessories like safety tint, security alarms & leather seats play to your favour. But stay clear of hard-core mods like branches, lowering suspensions & flamboyant body kits as these may be frowned upon by potential buyers.
- Colours. White, silver & black are the most popular car colours, and hence will most likely fetch you a higher price than newer funky matte or neon wraps.
- Give your car a full wash & valet before entering the 2nd hand market. If it’s due for a service, get this done too. Like selling a house — first impressions count – and you want to nail this important step which will add more perceived value to your car.
